A Hale Lecture with Alumna, Angharad Wood

For our first Hale Lecture of the academic year, we were delighted to welcome back FHRP alumna Angharad Wood (Class of 1993), a leading agent for actors and founder of the boutique talent and theatrical agency Tavistock Wood.

Angharad’s mother worked alongside Baroness Hale, the founder of the Hale Lectures here at Francis Holland Regent's Park, making her return to school especially meaningful. In an engaging panel discussion led by Year 13 students Dori and Holly, both aspiring to careers in the film industry, Angharad offered fascinating insights into the world of talent representation and the evolving landscape of film and television.

After studying Latin and Greek at Cambridge, Angharad began her career as an assistant, determined to “get her foot in the door.” Her perseverance paid off - 20 years after founding Tavistock Wood with just 11 clients, the agency now represents over 200 actors, including some of the most recognisable names in film today. Notably, Angharad spotted Lily James’ potential early in her career, securing her the titular role in the 2015 live adaptation of Cinderella.

She described her work as a balance of glamour and grit - while the job involves travel to global film festivals and working with high-profile clients, it is underpinned by long hours, exceptional organisation, and a deep commitment to her clients’ success. She highlighted time management, communication and people skills as essential attributes for anyone entering the industry, adding that working as an assistant is one of the best ways to learn and network.

Reflecting on her humanities background, Angharad credited it with developing her analytical and critical thinking skills but emphasised that the profession ultimately hinges on connection and character. She also addressed the growing influence of AI in film and television, urging students to celebrate originality and support the art that is great acting.

We are incredibly grateful to Angharad for returning to Francis Holland Regent's Park and inspiring our pupils with her warmth, wisdom, and candour. Her visit was a powerful reminder of where an FHRP education, and a determined spirit, can lead.
